RESTORING THE DETAILS: INSIDE THE OVIATT'S POWDER ROOM
Some rooms make an impression the moment you walk in.
The Oviatt's powder room has always been one of those spaces. With its rich woodwork, mirrors, distinctive fixtures, and unmistakable Art Deco personality, it's a little room with quite a bit of history and personality.
As the Penthouse's ongoing restoration continues under the direction of interior designer Adam Greco of Greco Deco, this iconic space has received some well-deserved attention.
The most exciting detail? A fabric with a remarkable connection to the beginnings of Art Deco.
Powder Room Before - Lulan Photo
A little piece of Paris, circa 1925
To understand what makes the powder room's refresh so special, we have to travel back just over a century, to Paris in 1925.
That year, the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes introduced the world to the design movement that would become known as Art Deco.
James Oviatt attended the exhibition, finding inspiration in the modern materials, craftsmanship, and decorative styles that would later influence the creation of his extraordinary Los Angeles Penthouse.
A century later, that same exhibition has found its way back into The Oviatt.
The powder room now features Exposition 1925, a fabric by French textile house Prelle that was first introduced at the 1925 exhibition and is still made using the same techniques today.
A century of craftsmanship, back on the walls
The newly installed fabric brings an incredible amount of texture and character to the powder room.
Its intricate botanical motifs, geometric borders, and warm copper and olive tones feel right at home alongside the room's rich wood finishes and deep green upholstery.
There's something particularly special about seeing a century-old textile design find its place in a building so closely connected to the movement that inspired it.
And while the fabric may be the star of this particular chapter, it's the combination of details that makes the room so memorable.
Refreshed Powder Room - 2026
Preserving the past, one room at a time
As The Oviatt approaches its centennial in 2028, we're reminded that some of the most interesting stories in a historic building are found in its smallest spaces.
The powder room's refresh is another example of how thoughtful restoration can celebrate original character while allowing a space to continue evolving.
And we love that, in this case, a little piece of the 1925 Paris exhibition has found its way back into the story of The Oviatt.
There's still plenty more to share as Adam Greco and his team continue their work throughout the Penthouse.
In the meantime, we invite you to experience it for yourself. Schedule a private tour to explore The Oviatt's remarkable interiors and see the beautiful work underway to preserve this piece of Los Angeles history for generations to come.
